Sustainability

WE SEEK TO BE A SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS; IN ITS MULTIPLE DIMENSIONS

Being a sustainable business goes beyond reducing plastic in your packaging and becoming carbon neutral. Here we tell you why BigidyOaxaca is an increasingly sustainable company:

Environmental dimensions

- Our partners use natural raw materials such as cotton and wool.

- They also sometimes use recycled versions of these natural materials.

- When selecting a color palette, we prefer nature-based colors for dyeing textiles, or we opt for natural neutral tones over artificial colors.
- Traditionally, our products are made by hand or treadle looms, rather than involving energy-intensive production methods.
- Traditionally , our partners use very low amounts of water to clean, dye and finish textiles. In Teotitlán del Valle rainwater is collected (most of the time) and used for textile production.
- We seek to prevent waste and overproduction by having only a handful of beautiful handcrafted creations while promoting a pre-order system for some of our products, such as rugs.

Social dimensions

- Traditional dyeing methods with natural dyes do not harm the environment or the people who produce textiles.
- Consuming products made with traditional Oaxacan methods helps preserve and improve our cultural heritage.
- We are transparent about how products are made, what they are made of and especially who made them. This is a small but significant step in recognizing our partners' efforts to create wonderful pieces.

Economic dimensions

- By working primarily with women artisans and their families, we aim to improve their economic independence and also improve the local economy.
- We support our partners to build economic resilience by increasing their income-generating sources, instead of relying solely on tourism.
